Egyptian director Mohamed Diab's gripping thriller (last seen at Hafenkino: Cairo 678) opened the Un Certain Regard section at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. Filmed in documentary style from inside a police prison van, Clash deals with the unrest and repercussions of the Arab Spring and highlights the unabatedly topical issue of different opinions clashing in a political system marked by violence. Diab took four years to make this film. Having been at the forefront of the Egyptian revolution in 2011, he wanted to make a film about it. In the course of production, however, the political landscape changed fundamentally, so that in light of the 2013 coup, the film ultimately focuses on the overthrow of President Mursi or the subsequent unrest.
