For more than 20 years Georges, the owner of the nightclub "The Jester's Cage", and his great love Albin, as the enchanting Zaza the star of the evening show, have been a couple. A love where things often heat up: crises, kisses, quarrels and passion are the spice of their many years of togetherness.
These crises they have not least their origin in George's only adventure with a woman, which produced his son Laurent, whom they both lovingly raised together. Now Laurent is grown up, in love and about to marry his beloved. The families of the lovers are supposed to get to know each other for the engagement, of course. What Laurent and his fathers didn't know until then, however, is that his fiancée Muriel comes from an arch-conservative family. Their parents fight zealously against any freedoms they can imagine.
The pairs of parents could hardly be more different. In order to avoid an éclat and the collapse of their wedding, Georges and Albin agree to pretend to be a conventional family for the sake of their son. To do this, they try to make their surroundings, including themselves, as harmless and inconspicuous as possible.
The day of days is approaching, and as the hour advances, overplaying their secrecy becomes quite complicated after all. So there is eager confusion, mistaken identity and chatting away - the disasters roll over. In the end, however, love triumphs over all resentment.
In 1973, La Cage aux Folles, as the play is originally called, premiered at the Théatre du Palais Royal in Paris and it has been impossible to imagine the theatre world without it ever since. Jean Poiret has created a unique comedy that skilfully balances hilarious moments in which Albin and Georges try to feign a bourgeois existence with tragic moments in which tolerance for homosexual partnerships really shines through. The cage full of fools - as a film, as a musical, as a stage play - this is simply cult.
Cult to cult: Albin alias Zaza is played this evening in Langen by Lilo Wanders, wonderful. The travesty artist and actor was co-founder of the legendary Hamburg Schmidt Theater and invented just there the art figure Lilo Wanders, as which he, Mr. Ernst-Johann "Ernie" Reinhardt, married, three children, has long been known throughout the republic. From 1994 to 2004 he hosted the television show Wa(h)re Liebe on the VOX television channel. The multi-talented actor has played roles in cinema and television films, hosted shows and variety programmes and has always acted as well. And now, then, A Cage Full of Fools.
