Play for children aged 5+ by Henning Mankell
Lukas is given a little black cat for his sixth birthday. When "Munkel", whom Lukas loves and learns to be responsible for, disappears after a short time, Lukas desperately wants him back. He even decides to become like a cat to find him. He packs his bags and takes off.
"A Cat Black as Night" is less a cat story than an exploration of love and loss. With a precise look into an ordinary family, Henning Mankell tells of the great feelings of a young boy: During his search, he experiences fear and anger as well as joy and sadness. He learns to deal with loss, marvels at the obtuseness of adults and reaches the point where not every question has an answer. However, since children are smarter than adults, there is a conciliatory ending to the story of Luke and his cat.
The production features multimedia elements for children. The boy's surroundings, nursery and garden, are found sparsely furnished on stage, the adult world is represented by projection, and finally the cat is played in pantomime-dance, adding a non-verbal, poetic dimension to the story.
The production was supported by the Cultural Office of the City of Frankfurt and the Hessian Ministry of Science and the Arts.
