"A Labour of Love" presents more than 150 works from the collection of the Weltkulturen Museum, produced by black South African artists in the 1980s.
prints, paintings, sculptures, and previously unpublished archival material bear witness to interpersonal relationships but also to the passion and dedication that inform both the production and the genesis of the collection.
A contemporary perspective on this particular collection is provided by ten new productions by Gabi Ngcobo and four young artists from South Africa, who have been engaging with the collection and its particular history since mid-2014, presenting their reflections in the form of video works, installations and prints.
True to the concept of the house, the special productions enter the museum's collection. This also applies to the ten works by Sam Nhlengethwa, which were created during a residency at the World Cultures Laboratory in July 2015.
