Exile, flight, loss of home, political persecution: These terms describe a thematic field that Schauspiel Frankfurt will address in the 2017/18 season. The new artistic director Anselm Weber will deal with these topics in his first own production in his inaugural season, told from the perspective of fugitives. And it is precisely here that the artistic plans of Schauspiel Frankfurt meet those of the Musikfest at the Alte Oper: for in Winterreise, the central piece of the Musikfest and one of the major works of the Romantic period, the questions of being a stranger in one's own country are also posed in a haunting way. What political dimension do these questions have in Schubert's poetry, in the music of his lyricist Wilhelm Müller, and indeed in the Romantic era in general? The joint evening of the Schauspiel Frankfurt and the Alte Oper is dedicated to this topic and questions Romanticism for all its political and social explosive power. With music, with texts and conversations, the actors of the evening will approach a time and a period in history in which the search for positioning within society was connected for many artists with the experience of alienation. Anselm Weber will give exclusive insights into his current rehearsal work, actors will interpret text excerpts from the new production and texts from the Romantic period. Also taking part is the British tenor Ian Bostridge, who not only as a singer but also as a historian and philosopher has dealt intensively with Romanticism in general and Schubert's life in particular - and almost obsessively: "Anatomy of an Obsession" was the subtitle of the original English edition of his book on the "Winterreise" published in 2015, which received rave reviews in specialist circles and feuilletons.
