Quickly, in 1995, a motley assortment of dropouts consisting of musicians, dancers, artists, farmers, ex-yakuzas, adventurers, professional vagrants gathered around veteran guitarist Makoto Kawabata to participate in the musical as well as spiritual growth of 'Acid Mothers Temple'. Kawabata originally formed the group with the intention of producing "extreme trip music". His influences were in the realm of progressive rock, krautrock, and German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. Soon after, 'Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O.' was born, and with it, their most distinctive band and collective. Now a cult band (after 23 years), they have built a loyal following around the globe with their psych rock orgies.
Their outlandish appearance and eccentric band photos and record covers have been a part of the Acid Mothers collective's cosmos since the beginning. The band is known for their phenomenal live shows and their enormous output of albums on various international labels. Collaborations with other, often Japanese bands and under adventurous names (or name additions), are commonplace. According to Kawabata, these various bands are manifestations of the many facets of a single and unique entity, the unified Acid Mothers Temple. Today, the line-up of AMT & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O is composed of 4 core members with rotating guest musicians. 2018 saw the release of their latest album "Hellelujah Mystic Garden Part One" on Important Records (US).
