During the winter months, the life of the Hessian rural population was marked by darkness and privation. How did people cope with this in the mid-19th century? The wheelwright Hermann Orth and his wife Elisabeth take you back to a time when the light bulb had not yet been invented and the economy and professions were in a state of flux. To survive the cold season, the couple must become inventive - both in finding work and in providing light and warmth for themselves.
