The members of Against The Current have only just matured into twentysomethings, but have already been playing together for seven years - and in that time have been able to build up a loyal fanbase via the internet. Foremost among them is their singer Chrissy Constanza, who is a role model to hundreds of thousands of young girls in the U.S. with her numerous YouTube tutorials on hair styling, makeup, and her love of animals. The band, in turn, took their time to carefully mature their first songs, also released via YouTube. The single "Gravity" from their EP of the same name proved particularly successful, now boasting over 20 million clicks. 2016 finally saw the release of their debut album "In Our Bones", which immediately rose to #2 on the US Heatseekers chart and also climbed straight into the Top 30 in the UK. Since then, the band has been on and off on a world tour and will be coming to Germany for five shows in Cologne, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Frankfurt between October 5 and 10, when they will also be performing the songs from their second album live for the first time, which will be released this year.
Against The Current's founding story followed two distinct paths: First, there was a three-piece band from Poughkeepsie, New York, consisting of guitarists Daniel Gow and Jeremy Rompala and drummer Will Ferri, who worked diligently on their angsty, powerful pop sound. And then, about an hour's drive away in New York City, there was the then 15-year-old Chrissy Constanza, who used YouTube clips to encourage other girls to find their own style and confidently put it out there. She gave make-up and hair styling tips and talked freely and cheekily about her everyday life. In addition, Chrissy sang since early childhood, but without seeing in it a professional opportunity.
A mutual friend brought the musicians and Chrissy together, Against The Current were formed. Shortly after Jeremy Rompala left the group, the remaining trio spent almost every weekend together from then on, honing their own songs, which they also distributed via YouTube. Here, of course, the great prominence of Chrissy's video blogs came to their aid. Against The Current quickly became a new internet phenomenon, partly because they kept collaborating with other YouTube stars like Alex Goot or 5 Seconds Of Summer. After several years of rehearsals, the band ventured out of the virtual world into the real one and started doing their first small tours across the US. In the meantime, word of their quality had spread - their timeless pop-rock with anthemic melodies struck a chord with many listeners. This is also illustrated by the number of hits on their YouTube videos, with almost 290 million clicks and close to two million subscribers.
Via iTunes released their EP "Gravity", which promptly became an international hit and allowed the band to embark on a world tour even before the release of their first album, during which they also played some acclaimed concerts in Germany. In May 2016, the band released their debut album titled "In Our Bones", which not only charted in the US and UK, but also in many other nations. Another indication of their exceptional compositional quality was found in the 1st place annual poll by the prestigious Kerrang! magazine in the 'Song of the Year' category for their song "Talk". Since the album's release, the band has toured the world several times and will once again grace German fans with their intense live performance on five dates this coming October.
