For over 50 years, Alexander von Schlippenbach has been one of the most important pianists of improvised music. With his projects (Globe Unity Orchestra, Schlippenbach Trio, etc.), some of which have been in existence for decades, he is one of the most important instigators of the European jazz scene.
Saxophonist Frank Paul Schubert has attracted attention in recent years through the band Grid Mesh and through his project with Günter Baby Sommer Hic Sunt Leones. Schubert is characterized by a very idiosyncratic melodicism schooled in classical literature.
Alexander von Schlippenbach and Frank Paul Schubert have been working together in various combo formations since 2009, which has been documented on two joint CD releases so far, but mostly they act as a duo, with the compositional work of legendary pianist Thelonious Monk taking a central position.
