You wouldn't necessarily think that Ali As has been a part of the German rap game for over a decade. For that, the 37-year-old is far too much on the cutting edge in all respects and yet far away from any trends. He has airtight endless rhyme chains that make every rap fan with syllable-counting fetish sweat, he has a delivery marked by humor, eloquence and seriousness in equal measure, he has topics and he has bars - for himself and for others. Who is this guy who claims to be poet, redneck and prophet all rolled into one. But who is this guy actually?
Ali As was born as Zulfiqar Ali Chaudhry in 1979 in Munich, more precisely: in the southern district of Solln. At that time, he was not yet thinking about rap - but he was thinking about his own radio plays, which he recorded with his cassette recorder and which he misappropriated from the title melodies and sounds of series such as "Die drei ???". In 1990, Ali As is just 11 years old, rap comes along. At first he only listens to music by the Sugarhill Gang, Naughty By Nature or the Canadian duo Dream Warriors - then he starts making music himself. As part of the crossover combo Artzone, Ali As combines his penchant for rap with his preference for hardcore bands like Rage Against The Machine, Clawfinger and Rollins Band from 1995 on. In the beginning he translates lyrics of his favorite bands from English, then at some point the first own lyrics are added.
