After the First World War, a unique modernization and design project was created in Frankfurt am Main, which has gone down primarily in architectural history as "The New Frankfurt". However, it was a much more extensive project that had political, social and overall cultural dimensions and had no less an aspiration than to create a new city and a new society. Design, and especially graphic design, visual communication and typeface design, played a prominent role in this "New Frankfurt". In the exhibition "Everything New! 100 Years of New Typography and New Graphic Design in Frankfurt am Main" and the accompanying publication, the Frankfurt Museum of Applied Arts is for the first time undertaking a systematic reappraisal of this era for the field of typography and graphic design. On view until 21 August 2016, the show focuses on the 1920s, but extends the chronological arc further beyond the post-war period and into the 1980s, supplementing it with spotlights on the vibrant design scene today. This continues the museum's long-term series on Frankfurt design, which began in 2013 with the survey exhibition "Das Frankfurter Zimmer" and continued in 2014 with a focus on the design work of Ferdinand Kramer. As with these exhibitions, "Alles neu!" again uses specific examples to show that a special design attitude has emerged in and around Frankfurt am Main, characterized by a general openness to the new, to possible utopias and alternatives to the respective status quo.
