At first glance, things seem quite simple: Álvaro Soler is a charming Spaniard whose debut album "Eterno Agosto" as well as the hits "Sofia", "El Mismo Sol" and "Yo Contigo, Tú Conmigo (The Gong Gong Song)" have cleared over 30 gold, platinum and diamond awards worldwide. He's been nominated for three "Latin American Music Awards," his songs have been streamed nearly 390 million times on Spotify alone, and his YouTube channel is followed daily by more than 1.7 million rapt fans. But if you look a little closer, things are much more interesting: he has a Spanish mother and a German father and lived in Tokyo for seven years before returning to Barcelona to study industrial design. In 2015, he moved to Berlin and recorded his solo debut, which went straight into the Top 5 in Germany, cracked #1 in Poland, Switzerland and Italy, and secured top chart positions in the rest of Europe as well, while "Sofia" went a commanding #1 in 17 countries and reached the Top 5 in 30 countries worldwide. Despite this impressive record, the 27-year-old Álvaro doesn't take himself too seriously at all and doesn't set out for quick fame with his songs at all. Rather, the multilingual globetrotter is all about bringing different cultures together on a dancefloor - with infectious hooks and a dash of humour.
That self-deprecation and hit-making qualities go together perfectly is proven by Álvaro with "La Cintura," the first single from his sophomore album "Mar de Colores," due out in September. The track deals with what is actually a classic territory of southern men: the hip. In this region, no Northern European is fooling them, because Spaniards can do all sorts of things and, above all, they can dance - Álvaro is not a prime example, though: "When I was writing the song, I was thinking the whole time that I still had to throw ‚La Cintura', meaning ‚the hip', out of the chorus, because that's not me at all. I'm quite tall and a lanky guy, absolutely not a dancer. But then I thought, why don't I take an insecurity of mine - that is, the fact that it looks really silly when I dance - and write about it. If I'm just honest, it might actually end up being a strength ." And the delightfully refreshing request to help him get his hip region under control after all, Álvaro then packs into a chorus so infectiously good-humoured that all the cinturas of the world will take selfies - regardless of their respective dance badges.
