"America, you have it better."
Walt Whitman (1819 -1892) was one of the most influential American writers of the 19th century.
In his poetry, Whitman focused on the beauty of nature and the democracy of his country, of which Goethe also enthusiastically commented in 1827: "America, you have it better."
Introduced and accompanied by play scenes from Theater Willy Praml's current production, WESTEND authors Wolfgang Bittner and Mathias Bröckers discuss current America and the state of the utopia of democracy and freedom with director Willy Praml.
Wolfgang Bittner lives as a writer in Göttingen.
Wolfgang Bittner, who holds a doctorate in law, has written more than 60 books, received several prizes and awards, and is a member of PEN. From 1996 to 1998 he was a member of the broadcasting council of the WDR, and from 1997 to 2001 he was a member of the federal board of the Association of German Writers. Wolfgang Bittner most recently published "Die Eroberung Europas durch die USA".
Mathias Bröckers is a freelance journalist who writes for the taz. and Telepolis, among others.
His books "Die Wiederentdeckung der Nutzpflanze Hanf" (1993, "Conspiracies, Conspiracy Theories and the Secrets of 9/11" (2002) and "Wir sind die Guten - Ansichten eines Putinversteher" (2014) became international bestsellers.
