The festival is in its 16th year and has become the best known of its kind in Germany. In Europe, it is one of the highlights of the Cajun & Zydeco year for fans, along with three similar festivals in France, the Netherlands and the UK.
A ticket to the festival is a fraction of what a trip to the Mississippi Delta costs, and for more than three hours you have the perfect illusion of being immersed in the lively life there.
But what are these three exotic-seeming musical styles from the alligator-infested bayous of Louisiana? Do they have a history? Yes! And what a story!!! When the first "Acadians" - European emigrants of French descent - were forcibly expelled from Canada by the British in 1755 because they did not want to belong to the British Crown, they were settled in the inhospitable swamps of Louisiana. They brought with them French accordion music and songs. These blended with the blues of the black plantation slaves from Africa and the wild polyrhythms of the Caribbean. So this is how Cajun & Zydeco came into being as a fusion of several cultures. A good century had to pass before the term world music was created for it. Later it evolved into R&B as well as rock and roll.
The life-affirming feeling or in French "laissez les bons temps rouler" is what the American Cajun, Blues & Zydeco Festival conjures up on stage. If the alligators were swimming outside the windows, you might feel like you're somewhere on the bayou. Temperatures can be like tropical Louisiana with large crowds. In a heat like this, things can get heated up quickly, and like a hurricane, this pent-up feeling of life is released in a euphoric session. The festival always ends with this: wild, happy, sweaty, loud and fun-loving!
