ALTE OPER CAMPUS: WITHIN - MUSIC OF THE WORLD IN FRANKFURT

.Discussion round in cooperation with the Office for Multicultural Affairs

Points of contact, autonomies: Of the encounter between Anatolian musical traditions on the one hand and Western or Eastern cultures on the other hand tells the first concert of the series "Music of the World" of the Alte Oper Frankfurt on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. From 8 p.m. in the Mozart Hall, two duos span cross-references between the musical heritage of Anatolia to the music of Spain on the one hand and to the culture of the Caucasus on the other.

In the concert, Emre Gültekin and Vardan Hovanissian first bring together the sounds of the Turkish lute baglama with those of the Armenian double-reed instrument duduk. For more than ten years, the duo, who live in Belgium, have dedicated themselves through musical means to reconciliation and friendship between two cultures that share many common roots.

In the second part, with Derya Türkan on the Turkish lute Kemençe and Renaud-Garcia Fons on the double bass, the characteristics of Turkish art music meet the Andalusian cante jondo. Both musicians are concerned about crossing borders like this. In his artistic work, Türkan seeks points of contact with classical music, especially the early music scene. Renaud-Garcia Fons, on the other hand, likes to make forays into the worlds between flamenco and jazz, between traditional and contemporary music. Together, since 2014, they have found projects that explore the commonalities between Eastern and Western musical traditions.

Docked to the concert in the "Music of the World" series is a roundtable discussion co-hosted by the Alte Oper Frankfurt and the Office for Multicultural Affairs (AmkA). "Mittendrin - Musiken der Welt in Frankfurt" is the name of this new format, which will in future precede all dates in the world music series. Just over a week before the concert, on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, the first edition of these discussion rounds will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the AmkA premises, addressing questions of identity, origin and diversity in music.
