History of a European Problem

Germany is economically and politically the strongest nation in Europe. Yet today, as 100 years ago, while it is seen as a cultural beau, it is often seen as a ruthless strongman. Renowned historian Andreas Rödder, professor of modern history at the University of Mainz, tells the story of the conflicting feelings that a strong Germany has generated among its neighbors since the end of the 19th century. How can it confront these fears and conflicts today? How can German strength and the European common good be reconciled? And how can Germany use its position in Europe to position itself in the world?

Andreas Rödder's new book not only gets to the bottom of the historical causes of the German dilemma, but also shows ways to break it open in the current situation and escape the old perception trap.
