Working in the kitchen - dream job, transit station or dead end? Often a job in a restaurant is the first stop for people who are new to Germany. Those who don't speak German wash plates in the kitchen; those who speak the language are allowed to work in service. "If a menu costs 5 euros, you can assume that the people in the kitchen get 3.50 euros an hour," reveals a former chef. Despite the legal minimum wage! The kitchen is a place of drama, a micro-society in a state of emergency, a springboard to a hopefully new life! Top restaurateurs and neighborhood landlords, self-made women and dishwashers, commercial kitchen operators and runners - their experiences form the ingredients for this fictional-documentary guest feast about a transit generation caught between the right to their own way of life, minimum wages and the struggle for survival in a sector where there will always be work and underpayment.
The director Anestis Azas, who works between Athens and Berlin and has staged several times at the post-migrant theatre Ballhaus Naunynstraße Berlin, comes to the Mousonturm for the first time. With elaborate research and the approach of having everyday heroes and heroines act together with actors and actresses, Azas succeeds in negotiating explosive social situations on stage and theatrically displaying the mechanisms of order and exclusion in our society. For example, most recently with Clean City, the situation of cleaners in Greece, and with Farmakonisi, which was shown at the Wiesbaden Biennale 2016, migration movements in a Europe of crisis.
