Irma and Sam are hopefuls. In front of an audience of millions, they made it to the finals. Sealed off from the outside world, they are prepared in an arena for ten years to fly to the stars. For Earth is threatened with apocalypse, and a distant planet promises salvation.
Just before departure, Sam discovers a map to a place shrouded in myth: The Last Island. Sam, a cross between Parzival and Kaspar Hauser, breaks free, and Irma follows him. Together they set off in search of their own origins. Oddly, though, their pursuers, the guardians and trainers with the plague masks, keep waiting.
The novel evolves into a tenderly told adventure, borne of faith in a utopia. Hier ist es schön (Suhrkamp) was awarded the Robert Gernhardt Prize. Moderation: Björn Jager.
