Exactly 20 years ago, on May 10, 1996, "Apocalyptica Plays Metallica By Four Cellos" was released. This record was a milestone, fundamentally changed the heavy metal landscape and represented a completely new step for classical music: Four young and long-haired Finns, who had arranged four pieces by the thrash metal gods for their instrument for their final cello exam at the venerable Sibelius Academy, recorded a record that would revolutionize the genre. With their completely different approach to the hits of their favorite metallers - and, of course, one of the greatest rock bands of all time - their understanding of the originals and the musical and technical perfection of trained concert cellists (even if they didn't look like it), they transformed especially the enormously complex pieces from Metallica's early phase into crashing and depth-heavy versions that made fans celebrate, especially live. The quartet's concerts left and still leave nothing to be desired in terms of virtuosity, volume and originality. 20 years and seven studio albums later, Apocalyptica are still among the best and most innovative that the metal genre has to offer, and during this time they have expanded their sonic spectrum more and more. To mark the anniversary, "Apocalyptica Plays Metallica By Four Cellos" is being re-released with three bonus tracks, and for the first time in a long time, the work is being released on vinyl. Of course, the Finns will go on tour with the old hits: Until the end of 2016 Apocalyptica will rock the gigs of their "Shadowmaker" tour, including shows at M'era Luna, in Chemnitz and Karlsruhe as well as at Metal Hammer Paradise. Then in February 2017 they will come to Germany again with their very special 20th anniversary shows and an exceptional record.
