Turbulent and bitterly wicked, this classic crime comedy is murderous fun and has been hard to imagine stages without it since it was written in 1940.
The celebrated drama critic Mortimer is shocked when he unexpectedly finds a dead body in the home of his aunts, who are as Christianly social as they are utterly kind. Surely, he surmises, the consequences of the delusions of his older brother, whom the aunts are devotedly caring for, are not as harmlessly quirky as previously thought after all. Mortimer immediately pulls out all the stops to get both the corpse and the homicidal brother out of the vicinity of the aunts and his brother as quickly as possible - and without publicity! - from the proximity of the aunts and his fiancée. However, the task is made much more difficult by the fact that the third brother, a wanted murderer, suddenly turns up at the aunts' house - with another dead body in his luggage! The fact that local police officers, avid consumers of the old ladies' baked goods, are in and out of the house almost constantly doesn't help Mortimer's efforts much either. Moreover, as the slapstick corpse-shifting Oberwitz goes from strength to strength, terrifying chasms become visible behind the innocent facades of the two kindly elderly ladies ...
