At the end of the festival and in their first cooperation, the University Orchestra of the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and the Ensemble Modern dedicate themselves to the work Atmosphères by György Ligeti, whose dense rhythmic, tonal and precisely "atmospheric" fabric is reminiscent of electronic music. In the programme for the premiere at the Donaueschingen Music Festival in 1961, Ligeti himself wrote: "In this musical form there are no events, only states; no contours and shapes, only the unpopulated, imaginary musical space; and the timbres, the actual carriers of the form, become - detached from the musical shapes - intrinsic values." The University Orchestra will also present Béla Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra, which combines supreme virtuosity in every instrumental group with the sound of folk elements. Ensemble Modern will also present Study No. 7 by Conlon Nancarrow, who composed almost exclusively for the mechanical self-playing player piano, which enabled him to write extremely complex scores without regard to human players. Study No. 7 is based on two different tempi, speed and density constantly increasing. In order to meet the rhythmic demands as well as the musical expression, an extremely exact playing technique is required. The arrangement for chamber orchestra and for Ensemble Modern is by Yvar Mikhashoff. Textual sources and further information about this event: https://www.mousonturm.de/events/atmosphaeren/
