The band BaBa ZuLa, founded in Istanbul in 1996 by Levent Akman and Murat Ertel, is celebrating its 20th anniversary and, to mark the occasion, is releasing a compilation album of brand new material on Glitterbeat in January 2017!
Since Fatih Akin's award-winning documentary 'Crossing the Bridge' from 2005 at the latest, BaBa ZuLa have been regarded as the spearhead of progressive Turkish music even beyond the Orient. Their live performance has long enjoyed cult status: belly dancers, traditional costumes, poetry, theatre, painting, video performance and modern sound all come together to create an overall audiovisual experience.
Oriental instruments such as the darbuka and the electric saz are used as well as wooden spoons and oscillators. The tradition of Sufi, Turkish gypsy and pre-Islamic shaman music meets modern oriental dub, Anatolian folk and 60's psych rock. The band's credo is constant improvisation and reinterpretation of the existing.
