The hymns of the angels, the news of Jesus' birth, Mary's song of praise - they are unthinkable without music. "Sing to the Lord a new song" says the 98th Psalm, which Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy takes literally. He wrote numerous beautiful compositions that reflect the special love of the Protestant Reformed Mendelssohn family for Christmas and the story of salvation. His great models: Johann Sebastian Bach and Martin Luther, in whose music and texts Mendelssohn discovered whole worlds. "How every word calls for music, how everywhere a progress, a movement, a growth is found, that is just too wonderful!"
