For the last time, the titular work will be heard at the Musikfest as the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra takes on Ligeti. For Ligeti personally, "Atmosphères" was associated with an upheaval: he wrote the first draft while still in his native Hungary, from which he fled in 1956 and where there would have been no prospect of performing such a progressive work. Ligeti paid for his freedom with the loss of the homeland from whose traditions he had drawn so much inspiration. The Bamberg Symphony Orchestra shares this fate, having been founded by orchestral musicians who had to leave their homeland in Eastern Europe during the Second World War. Their sound is still determined today by the musical experience that the founding members brought with them from Europe's eastern cultural region. In the Musikfest's closing concert, they will meet an outstanding soloist: Frank Peter Zimmermann, celebrated on all international stages, will take on the solo part in Martinu's first violin concerto.
