"And my wife flies in the sky. Flying high. Very high. Then she becomes like a little bird. And then I don't see her anymore. She is with God." Ali, Muslim, family man, garbage man has lived and worked in Germany for many years as a guest worker. He has his own views about the country and the people, about which he narrates with naivety and comedy. He is popular, has earned his own house and his family is his center. With a certain naivety, Ali the guest worker tells his thoughts, his story. Very much influenced by his own social and cultural background, he reflects German conditions. At the centre of his reflections are his family, his work colleagues and an old woman. Ali has been living in Germany for 25 years now, has his own little house, and is popular with his colleagues. For him, family is one of the most important things in life ("A real man is three.") But this happiness is shattered when an arson attack on his house robs the stunned Ali of his wife and a son. The unbiased way in which Ali recounts what happened is affecting, though he neither accuses nor lapses into hateful slogans against the killers. Ali reports on his world in a very unique linguistic style. He tells of sad and funny moments, making it clear that he is above all a human being. In the course of this emotional monologue, it becomes clear that Ali's house was set on fire by right-wing extremists and that his wife and son were killed in the process. The consequence of this traumatic experience is a broken soul, but Ali does not accuse, speaking is his means of taming the unrelenting past, taking heart in hand and envisioning a better future.
