The German-language hit musical celebrates its 25th stage anniversary.
When the curtain rises on the first stage production of the famous French novella "La Belle et la Bête" in Cologne's Sartory Hall on September 3, 1994, an astonished German-speaking audience witnesses the world premiere of one of the most romantic musicals of all time. Since then, millions have feverishly followed the brave young Bella, laughing at the simple-mindedness of a rural village community and equally fearing and pitying the terrible Beast, who only becomes a handsome prince through the love of the plucky maiden. With highly acclaimed music by composer Martin Doepke, the German-language stage version of this touching love story is proving to be a huge success, drawing on European fairy tale tradition with expertise and carefully transporting the moving message of the tale to the musical stage. Just in time for Christmas 2019, the emotional story returns to theatrical stages in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in its acclaimed original version with live band and a new cast for an extensive tour of 30 cities.
First in 1997, three years after the German original, the Disney interpretation of this tale about the one love that can move mountains and conquer all that is evil and ugly has its German premiere, followed by many more cinema and theatre versions. "The Beauty and the Beast" - the latest film adaptation in spring 2017 entered the worldwide cinema charts at number 1 and became directly the most successful film of the year with over 1.3 billion US dollars grossed.
"Beauty and the Beast" - is a timelessly beautiful fable about the power of love. It is the story of the beautiful Bella who, out of affection for her father, goes to an enchanted castle. This belongs to the terrible Beast, a prince who has been enchanted because of his selfishness and can only be redeemed from his fate by true love. While Bella, despite her fear, first makes friends with the equally enchanted castle inhabitants and slowly gets closer to the Beast, the audience also gradually succumbs to his wild charm. For behind the rugged exterior lies a truly good heart. Bella also realizes this in a thrilling finale, in which she finally confesses her love to the Beast and thus frees him from his curse.
"Beauty and the Beast - The Musical" is a mixture of romance and drama, of a sombre atmosphere and the absolute joy of life. Audiences can look forward to a mix of soulful ballads and rocking songs in German, as well as unique stage sets and a spectacular light show.
