Ewald Palmetshofer, one of the most important contemporary playwrights, succeeds in taking hair-trigger aim at today's middle class with his Hauptmann rewriting: Married into a mechanical engineering business, the young entrepreneur Hoffmann has secured social advancement, which he now flanks with right-wing populist theses. His childhood friend Loth, who suddenly appears as a left-wing journalist and tries to expose him through his research, ultimately also relies only on the small private happiness of his casual love affairs. Hoffmann's wife vacillates between maternal bliss and depression, while her unsuccessful single sister briefly seeks shelter in the parental home, where the father's alcoholism is leaving increasingly clear traces. All struggle for perspective on this night, where in the end the sun rises to reveal what conditions are really like.
