For two decades, British collective Belle and Sebastian have been synonymous with anthemic, handmade indie pop with depth and meaning. Originally founded by bandleader Stuart Murdoch as a social project, the international success of this septet, which plays music as gently as it does infectiously, has grown steadily. Its albums are regular chart-toppers throughout Europe, as well as in Australia and the United States.
Belle and Sebastian are exceptional in every way. The band was never designed for hits or success, yet they have been perennial chart-toppers since the release of their debut, "Tigermilk," in 1996. 13 of their singles charted in the UK, with six breaking into the Top 30. But band founder Stuart Murdoch was never interested in widespread success. On the contrary, until their sixth album "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" in 2003, they consistently refused publicity, gave almost no interviews and were reluctant to be invited to TV shows or major festivals. All the more directly they made clear their exceptional artistic position within the independent scene, which was increasingly concerned with tonal authenticity and lyrical depth of meaning. The reason for this attitude has a simple explanation: Murdoch founded Belle and Sebastian as a social project for the unemployed in his hometown of Glasgow. He wanted to get young people off the streets and give them something to do. As he had already written numerous songs at this point, two albums and two EPs were released in the first year after foundation, which immediately brought first successes.
