Schubert and the celebration of "Heavenly Lengths"

A music seminar for inquisitive minds with Dr. Ulrike Kienzle

Duration: approx. 1 ¾ hour

Magical realm of romanticism: with a program that tells of fantasy worlds and longings, of inner views and explorations of the soul, the Berliner Philharmoniker and its principal conductor Kirill Petrenko accept the invitation to the Great Hall of the Alte Oper Frankfurt on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, from 8:00 pm. With Carl Maria von Weber's "Oberon Overture" and Franz Schubert's C major Symphony D 944, two works of the Romantic period are on the programme that speak of a sense of upheaval and inner reflection, and are therefore particularly appropriate for Kirill Petrenko (who is working on music by Schubert with the Berliner Philharmoniker for the first time this season). Twice, in the colourfully shimmering Oberon Overture as well as in Schubert's "Great" C major Symphony, composed almost simultaneously

, unaccompanied calls of the horn mark the beginning, as a symbol of an indefinite longing for nature. Between the two works, the conductor and orchestra intersperse music from the 20th century that reflects these Romantic worlds: Paul Hindemith's "Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber" play cheekily with the material and spin the Romantic sounds on into the modern era.

With precisely these three works, the Berliner Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko opened the new season at their regular venue, the Berliner Philharmonie, at the end of August. The first concert of the season was an event not only because of the outstanding musical performance, but also because for the first time in many months the Philharmonie was full to capacity. The Berlin press wrote of "two thousand happy standing ovations". In the Alte Oper, too, the Berlin Philharmonic's Romantic programme is associated with a return to full occupancy of the hall. From November 2021 all seats will be filled again, the guest performance of the Berliner Philharmoniker on 2 November will be the first date with new seating regulations. The prerequisite for attending the concert is a 3G certificate and the wearing of a medical mouth-nose protection in the entire house (also during the concert).

Before the concert with the Berlin Philharmonic, those interested have the opportunity to engage more intensively with Schubert's sound worlds: In the afternoon, from 4:00 to 5:45 p.m., the Clara Schumann Foyer will become a seminar room when musicologist Dr. Ulrike Kienzle introduces Schubert's symphonies. "Kienzle's Classics" is the motto of this series of events, which takes place as part of the new music education programme for adults "Alte Oper Campus".
