In the beginning was the poem: Janine Cathrein wrote and wrote, fascinated by the fact of being able to put feelings into words and thus touch them. She would probably have ended up in journalism or at the conservatory with the violin, but the guitar came into play. This is how band stories begin, in our case that of the Swiss family and friends band Black Sea Dahu. A name that is also a reference to a Swiss mythical creature called Dahu, said to have two legs of different lengths. A quirky image that is joined by Janine Cathrein, Simon Cathrein (her younger brother, skilled forester, cellist, percussionist and keyboardist), Vera Cathrein (her older sister, tent seamstress, guitarist and bassist), Paul Märki (urban nomad, skilled polygrapher, guitarist and bassist), Nick Furrer (barista, drummer, percussionist), and Ramon Ziegler (teacher, the piano and keyboard man) feel obliged.
"Finally, not another one of those delicate little-girl voices," wrote the Frankfurt Journal on the release of the album "White Creatures." "Janine Cathrein has rather a deep, mysterious, sometimes scratchy-throaty timbre, listen to 'The Core'. This is embedded in beautiful harmony vocals and sophisticated instrumentation (dobro, violin, glockenspiel) in finely chiseled arrangements. The Swiss want their debut to be understood as an urban folk aesthetic."
