"Ronja, the daughter of the robber chief Mattis, lives with her family and the whole band of robbers as the only child in Mattisburg. On Ronja's birth day, a great bolt of lightning struck the castle and split it in two by a great gorge. Mattisburg is Ronja's whole world until the day she is finally allowed to explore the forest on her own. From then on, she spends almost every day in her beloved forest, exploring the plants and animals there. One day in the forest she meets Birk, the son of the hostile robber chief Borka. Birk tells her that Borka's whole band of robbers has moved into the castle on the other side of the gorge. Ronja meets Birk again and again in the forest and together they have to master dangers and adventures. Ronja and Birk quickly become good friends and are happy to have found each other. Mattis, however, still wants to drive Borka out of his castle and captures Birk in order to blackmail Borka. To save her friend, Ronja jumps to the other side of the ravine and willingly lets Borka capture her. Immediately, Mattis agrees to let Birk go free and Borka also lets Ronja go. Disappointed by their parents' hostility, Ronja and Birk decide to live in harmony with nature in their forest from now on. Mattis misses his daughter Ronja very much and eventually seeks her out in the forest to apologize to her and Birk for his temper. Ronja forgives her father and returns to the castle with Birk, where the two previously hostile gangs of robbers have joined together to form one big gang and joyfully celebrate the return of their children."
