At the reading of their mother Nawal's will, twins Jeanne and Simon Marwan receive two sealed envelopes: one for their older brother, of whom they knew nothing, one for their father, whom they thought dead. In search of the addressees, the siblings travel to the land of their past. They recognize their own entanglement in a cycle of senseless violence. The powerless become perpetrators, the perpetrators become victims. In his most internationally successful play, the Canadian-Lebanese author Wajdi Mouawad tells the story of a cycle of suffering and retribution. The fate he describes always remains concrete in relation to the wars of our time; at the same time, it contains a supra-temporal, almost mythical dimension. Instead of an eternal return of evil, Mouawad asserts the possibility of utopia. Thus, from his description of hatred and guilt emerges unawares a plea for forgiveness.
