Berlin, 1929. The golden twenties give the Spree metropolis glamorous life, wild, progressive forms of relationships, glittering biographies - a pulsating city full of cosmopolitanism, tolerance and freedom. But economic crisis and unemployment take their toll, Nazi Germany is on the march. A change of times.
To this city comes the young American writer Clifford Bradshaw and meets the extraordinary nightclub singer Sally Bowles in the KitKatClub. They become a couple, but their time together is overshadowed by the Nazis, who are increasingly gaining power and brazenly painting colorful Berlin brown. All long ago, yet red-hot.
