Opéra comique by Georges Bizet to the libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy
With Sabine Fischmann and Michael Quast
In the Volksbühne today classical music is again presented in a humorous way without denouncing it. The duo Sabine Fischmann and Michael Quast always manage this difficult balancing act brilliantly. After Die Fledermaus, The Tales of Hoffmann, and Don Giovanni, they have now taken on another opera hit, Carmen, based on Bizet's original version as an opéra comique with spoken dialogues. Of course, this version is also about the eternally feminine, the eternally masculine, and the eternally risqué. The rebellious little bird, as which Carmen sings of love, is not plucked, but freed from the cage of operatic convention.
