"Carmen" is still one of the most popular operas today. Yet at its premiere (1875), audiences were initially shocked rather than delighted, for Bizet elevated the underprivileged - the fatally seductive gypsy Carmen and the deserted soldier Don José - to the main characters of his story. Nevertheless, the opera began its great triumphal procession. More than 140 years later, the work with its world of smugglers, bullfighters, factory workers, policemen, children and soldiers still fascinates audiences all over the world. Uwe Eric Laufenberg directs Georges Bizet's famous drama of love, passion and death with Lena Belkina as Carmen and Sébastien Guèze and Aaron Cawley as Don José. On the podium of the Hessisches Staatsorchester is GMD Patrick Lange.
