His drawing style is unmistakable: the black, clear line that he knows how to fan and construct endlessly, the artful play of shadows in the border areas between reality and imagination. Frenchman Marc-Antoine Mathieu is considered one of the most innovative creators of comics today.
For 30 years, he has been releasing albums that break and change the rules and codes of the genre. With precise drawings and profound verbal wit, they offer readers unfamiliar perspectives and draw attention to the mysteriousness of things.
The exhibition Cartography of Dreams. The Art of Marc-Antoine Mathieu introduces the work of this extraordinary storyteller and extends the reading experience of irritation, the labyrinthine and the surreal into (museum) space. From June 3 to October 15, 2017, the architecture of Cartography of Dreams builds a bridge for visitors to Mathieu's comic book cosmos. With expansive installations and adaptations of motifs of passage and transition, it connects to the nested narrative structures and creates a sensory experiential space that allows the narrative quality and imaginative power of Mathieu's comic work to be intensely experienced.
A selection of more than 50 original drawings forms a cross-section of the albums Mathieu has created as a draughtsman, lyricist and scenarist since the early 1990s. In addition, the exhibition presents unpublished sequences from his recent production, as well as bronze sculptures and animated films that provide alternative approaches to the author's work and deepen his narrative palette.
