CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA RICCARDO MUTI conductor ALFREDO CATALANI Contemplazione RICHARD STRAUSS Don Juan op. 20 PIOTR ILYICH CHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 4 in F minor op. 36 "Don Juan's success magnificent," Richard Strauss exulted after the premiere with the Weimar Hofkapelle in the autumn of 1889, "the piece sounded enchanting, went excellently and unleashed a storm of applause quite unheard of for Weimar." In keeping with his protagonist's never-ending libido, Strauss created a sensuous, powerful tonal language with opulent orchestration and timbral magic. It is a feast for the ears to hear this great orchestral painting celebrated by one of the world's top orchestras. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, led by its principal conductor Riccardo Muti, accepts the invitation to the Alte Oper. In his modest manner, Muti readily admits that he only ever gives back to an orchestra what he himself has learned from working with such important orchestras as the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics. Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra have been learning from each other since 2010 - and it's a most gratifying give-and-take!
