"When I sing Brahms songs, I feel like a viola," is how Christian Gerhaher once put it - who, incidentally, once played the violin himself and found his most trusted piano partner in the son of his violin teacher, namely the pianist Gerold Huber. Brahms' songs are lusher, heavier and darker than those of the other Romantics, according to Gerhaher. The baritone will present an idiosyncratic Brahms cycle at the Alte Oper, because it is interspersed with numerous intertextual passages: "Die schöne Magelone", Brahms's settings of 15 romances of a medieval love story rewritten in 1797 by Ludwig Tieck, which in turn Martin Walser adapted especially for the song duo Gerhaher-Huber as an updated literary-musical performance version. Walser himself is a self-confessed admirer of the singer from Lower Bavaria, who sings "like nothing has been sung for a long time". Ulrich Tukur will perform Walser's text, a "very romantically carved prose", according to Martin Walser, which he has "renewed as gently as possible".
