The cinema film "GOTT" by Ferdinand von Schirach is one of the most successful dramas of our time. Richard Gärtner, a 78-year-old former architect played by Matthias Habich, has one wish: he wants to end his life. But he does not want to do this abroad, but legally, with the support of his family doctor. Richard Gärtner's situation is discussed before the Ethics Council. The debate is not about which types of euthanasia are exempt from punishment for doctors, but whether doctors are allowed to fulfil the wishes of a patient who is tired of life - regardless of whether the patient is young or old, healthy or ill.
Dr Keller, a member of the Ethics Council and played by Ina Weisse, asks experts and lets them express their opinions. At the end, the chairwoman addresses the audience directly with the question: Should Richard Gärtner be given the lethal medication to end his life in a self-determined manner?
Assisted suicide is legal in Germany and takes place within a secure legal framework. In the ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court in February 2020, the only requirement is that the person willing to die must be freely responsible.
Everyone is allowed to help - including all doctors and professional organisations.
