Alan Ayckbourn's one-act plays tell stories of reality and fantasy, with closely observed dialogue and assured, quiet humour, about the unexpectedly difficult attempts to hold one's own in everyday life and to communicate with those around one.
Alan Ayckbourn (born 1939 in London) began as an actor and was long a director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough. Since 1959 he has written around 80 plays and is now considered one of the most important contemporary English playwrights.
