In a five-door minivan, a Fiat Ulysse (!), four women in their late fifties and their chauffeur embark on an educational journey. The starting point is the wine village of Steinbronn on the Moselle, where the four heroines Penny, Beatrice, Dodo and Laura, who grew up in Berlin, now call home. When they arrive in the Vosges, their vehicle goes on strike and an odyssey into their inner lives begins. For now the four would-be widows, best friends for years, are telling each other secrets that have defined their lives.
With a fine pen, Dagmar Leupold knows how to draw the lives and idiosyncrasies of her four heroines. Chauffeur Bendix is the fifth in the group, who observes, notes and comments on everything from a balanced distance, as d'Artagnan did in his day before he became a musketeer himself. A sequel to the novel might show him becoming part of the gang as a "widower."
