Daniel Müller-Schott is the museum soloist of this season. For his first of two chamber concerts, the cellist and his Macedonian-born piano partner have chosen specialties from the Romantic repertoire. In his F major Sonata (1886), Johannes Brahms reflects a comparatively relaxed, happy moment in life with the folk song "Ich hab mich ergeben, mit Herz und mit Hand". Robert Schumann's Op. 70 (1849, originally for horn and piano) contains passages of "the most intimate, tender expression, as well as others of the most fiery passion," according to a contemporary review. The Sonata op. 6 (1881/83) promoted the breakthrough of the still young composer Richard Strauss. And Anton Webern, the master of reduction? He feared the public's reaction to his pieces composed in 1914, consisting of only a few bars and notes. When he sang and shouted (!), reports Viennese pianist Peter Stadlen, "when he moved his arms and stamped his feet in an attempt to express what he called the meaning of music, I was amazed to see that he treated these few notes, standing alone, as if they were cascades of sound."
