Comedy based on a story by Grimm contemporary Franz von Kobell
Theatre version: Kurt Wilhelm
The 'Boanlkramer', also known as the Grim Reaper, is supposed to accompany the 72-year-old Brandner Kaspar into the afterlife. The latter does not even think of following him and first pours him cherry brandy. Drunk, Death is cheated at cards and Brandner gains another 18 years of life. When his granddaughter dies in an accident three years later, the swindle is discovered. To save his neck, Death now tries to tempt Brandner with a glimpse of paradise. Stripped of his zest for life, he agrees and is so moved by the beauty of heaven that no more convincing is needed and he stays right there.
This classic play, as adapted by Kurt Wilhelm, is a rousing comedy that gives life and death a new perspective.
