As part of RAY 2018 Fotografieprojekte Rhein-Main, MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst presents the exhibition of the finalists of the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2018: Mathieu Asselin, Rafal Milach, Batia Suter and Luke Willis Thompson at MMK 3.
This year's finalists' works use a variety of stylistic approaches and visual formats to critically question the production and manipulation of knowledge and political systems. The projects include, on the one hand, a sharp examination of biotech giant Monsanto by Mathieu Asselins, compiled in hundreds of documents and photographs, and an investigation of what at first glance appear to be innocuous methods of state influence and propaganda by Rafal Milach. An encyclopedic collection of visual associations illustrating how the relative meaning of printed images can shift depending on their context is presented by Batia Suter while Luke Willis Thompson shows a very moving cinematic study of grief that deals with the personal consequences of visual representation and media dissemination.
2018 marks the 21st anniversary of the Photography Prize, maintaining its prominence as a prestigious award for special artistic talent and outstanding photographic achievement. The Photography Prize was established in 1997 by London's Photographers' Gallery and is awarded annually in conjunction with the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation. The £30,000 prize honours a living photographic artist of any nationality who has made a significant contribution to the medium of photography in the form of an exhibition or publication in Europe in the previous year.
Following 2015 and 2017, this year the prize will be presented for the third time by MMK together with Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation at MMK 3.
