Family tragedy and political conflict become inextricably intertwined at the Spanish court: Prince Carlos loves Elizabeth, who was forced to marry his father, King Philip. Carlos' friend Posa promises help and in return demands that Carlos lead the fight for freedom of Dutch provinces against the Spanish crown - a rebellion against his own father. Posa himself infiltrates the court's power system in order to make his vision of freedom and equality heard. In the process, he is discovered by the king, of all people, to be the "man"he so desperately seeks in his lonely omnipotence. More and more, Posa becomes entangled in the webs of intrigue and inquisition. Few other works of dramatic literature show so precisely the conflict between the individual's search for happiness and the constraints to which he is subject, individual room for manoeuvre and political responsibility, freedom and power.
