The choreography Effect forms the starting point for the interdisciplinary project Between Us, which brings together dance, visual art and science. The award-winning Finn Taneli Törmä and five ensemble members of tanzmainz developed the 60-minute piece, whose information is exchanged between the project participants. Using state-of-the-art motion-capturing techniques, the dancers' movements were recorded by the Motion Bank research project at Mainz University of Applied Sciences and converted into abstract data streams. With a complete documentation of the six-week development phase of the piece, additionally captured background information as well as the recording of several run-throughs, the creation process of Effect is probably the best documented worldwide. Dance and choreography form the working basis for international contemporary artists* Tim Etchells, Sissel Tolaas, Tamara Grcic, Søren Lyngsø Knudsen, Žilvinas Kempinas and Isabel Lewis. Inspired by the source material, they create new works that are presented at Kunsthalle Mainz. These artworks, the performances of tanzmainz and the digital dance mediation by Motion Bank combine to form Between Us. Multi-layered processes between the project partners, which always circulate around the question of the transmission of information, are thus made visible. How has the original information of the choreography changed and how are the movements transferred into works of art? What information content does data contain and for whom can it be read? By means of the interlocking of art, science and dance, it becomes clear how complex information and its transmission processes are. In this way, the project Between Us addresses questions that are highly relevant today against the backdrop of the digital transformation of society. As part of the project, Kunsthalle Mainz is showing the exhibition Between Us. The exhibition will be on view from March 15 to June 16 inclusive. The opening of the exhibition will take place on Thursday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Kunsthalle.
