Emil Mangelsdorff was born 94 years ago in Frankfurt am Main and grew up under the conditions of the Nazi system. He makes music and at the same time gives a lively and humorous account of the experiences and adventures of Emil, a young man who discovers his passion for jazz and is determined to become a jazz musician. He belongs to that "swing youth" in Frankfurt who lives a counterculture to the Nazi system and endures measures taken by the Gestapo up to and including arrest. The state in which he grows up suppresses and persecutes every artistic articulation whose basis is freedom and human dignity. Emil, impressed by the expressiveness of jazz, by the diversity of means of this music, learns that cultural curiosity, creativity and openness are enough to bring the state power on the scene.
The multiple award-winning Mangelsdorff tells the story from the perspective of a young person and shows impressively and vividly that civil courage and a commitment to cultural diversity are possible and necessary in any society, but that walking upright is also fun.
