An exhibition of the International Days Ingelheim visiting the Museum Wiesbaden The artistic work of Emil Nolde is always immediately associated with ideas of strongly colored flower gardens, wildly excited seascapes under dramatic cloud formations, or intense impressions of the famous journey to the South Seas immediately before the First World War. Largely unknown is another facet of Nolde's extensive oeuvre: the fantastic and the grotesque. In Nolde's four-volume autobiography and in letters, there are multiple references and explanations that make it clear that his artistic work was decisively influenced and shaped by his subjective relationship to the fantastic and the grotesque. Even his first oil painting, the Bergriesen of 1895/96, and the series of mountain postcards in which Nolde gives grotesque human physiognomies to Swiss mountains, and which made him known as a visual artist even before the turn of the twentieth century, bear witness to Nolde's intense interest in the fantastic.

From these beginnings, which are followed in 1905 by the portfolio Phantasien mit Radierungen (Fantasies with Etchings), to the years when he was banned from working by the National Socialists, there is a recurring theme in his work of turning away from reality towards a grotesque counter-world.

The exhibition, which is being mounted in close cooperation with the Nolde Foundation Seebüll, comprises 20 paintings as well as approx. 90 works on paper, some of which have never before been shown publicly in an exhibition.
