He has been accurately described as a "fine spirit of high comedy", "master of the abyss", "universal genius", "poet of the everyday" or "magician of the unthinkable": Ernst Kahl, a true multi-talent, whom the Caricatura Museum Frankfurt is honouring with a major solo exhibition on the occasion of his 70th birthday. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, the Caricatura Museum Frankfurt honours him with a large solo exhibition.

Ernst Kahl was born on 11.2.1949 in Schleswig-Holstein. After two aborted apprenticeships and a year of wandering, his talent was recognized at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and he was accepted without an entrance examination. After a few semesters without a degree, he did his community service in a hospital, became an assistant teacher on a Hallig, lived in Denmark and ran an antiques and art business in Ostholstein.

In 1980 Ernst Kahl returned to Hamburg and worked as a freelance cartoonist, painter, author, lyricist, musician, scriptwriter and actor. He appeared in pubs with cartoon and slide shows, published his columns, cartoons and picture stories in Pardon, Konkret, Titanic, Der Feinschmecker, Stern and other magazines. This was followed by exhibitions, book illustrations and, since 1984, his own books. He published music CDs, wrote scripts for "Werner beinhart", "Wir können auch anders" and "Die drei Mädels von der Tankstelle", made short films and appeared in some of them as an actor himself. Ernst Kahl, who set new standards in art and comedy, received many awards, including the Federal Film Prize, the Göttingen Elk, the Wilhelm Busch Prize and the Sondermann Prize for Comic Art.

Kahl's stylistically, technically, and thematically diverse oeuvre includes paintings on canvas and wood, watercolors, drawings, and mixed media of various kinds, including wash sepia pen drawings. There are also edited photographs and photo novels, objects and installations, as well as drawn scripts, short films, texts and music.

Free of traditional boundaries and visual habits, he adapts, quotes and alienates a wide variety of motifs, art media, pictorial forms and genres of "high art", from magnificent panel paintings to cartoons and picture stories. His works break with (caricature) conventions: Childish strokes meet drastic themes, art-historically significant motifs meet the comical, the bizarre and the scurrilous. Whether people, animals, intersex, culinary or political: also thematically the work of the "cheeky innovator" Ernst Kahls is broadly positioned.

Among his best-known works are the bestiary Perversum, in which he draws attention to the disturbed relationship of urban man to animals, Kahl's Tafelspitzen, comical images of culinary content published in the magazine Der Feinschmecker from 1992 to 2010, as well as his regular contributions to Titanic since 1980.
