Everyman is a self-important banker, times are hard, sober and godless. Money rules the world and replaces religion. While riots are brewing in the streets outside, Everyman wants to have a party behind fences in his garden. One of the guests is Death. When the manager suspects that his last hour has come, he asks for a postponement. But for him, as for everyone else, everyone has to die, and everyone dies alone. His money will be of no use to him in the end. Everybody will become nobody. And the question remains: What comes after? NOTHING?
The young Austrian playwright Ferdinand Schmalz frees Hugo von Hofmannsthal's original, which has become one of the icons of the theatre, from the tight moral corset of the medieval mystery play. His playful use of language and verse, sharpening and expanding the conflicts by including today's social conditions transports this new version into our present.
